Why is it less expensive to maintain an inkjet printer that has a black ink cartridge than one that does not?

Black ink costs less than colored ink. It also doesn't clog the inkjets as much.

Black ink is cheaper than colored, and if you have a multi-color cartridge that also contains black, you will have to replace the whole cartridge, color and all, more often. Thus, if you have a separate cartridge for black, you will have to replace the color less often, and can replace only the cheaper black ink.
