My printer ink in my inkjet always dries up and makes bad prints-- what can I do?

I know I can clean print heads and make test prints but the problem is so bad that I waste so much expensive ink that it isn't worth the trouble. Should I try to store it in a cabinet with a wet sponge to keep it humid (like my kid's guitar)? I can't keep wasting so much ink and getting such bad prints-- please help! I use a Mac and it has happened with my Canon and now my HP-- do you have any better printer suggestions? My printer ink in my inkjet always dries up and makes bad prints-- what can I do?
I suggest that you print out both a colour print and black print at least once a week to avoid your tanks drying out.
