What is the best photo inkjet printer with lowest cost ink cartridges?

My experience: My first photo/inkjet was a Canon S800 ? Loved it, but when the cartridges needed to be replaced, they were over $20 a piece (6 cartridges). I got a Lexmart--cheap ink, but the quality sucked and I returned it within a few days. I splurged on a higher end Epson and discovered all the stories about the print heads drying up-making it useless were true.

I've used laser printers at work and don't think they print photos very well at all. What about having ink cartridges refilled? I've heard the ink isn't the same quality.

I don't want one that strictly prints photos because it will be used for printing several other types of projects, some text documents (very few). What is the best photo inkjet printer with lowest cost ink cartridges?
I would advise you to absolutely avoid Kodak... Regardless of what appears to be lower ink prices.'

Kodak's support system and drivers are probably worse than ***ANY*** other printer manufacturer in the industry, bar none. Forget sharing your printer to other computers, forget anything but a ';canned'; response to questions, I don't know if their support people CAN NOT read plain English questions, or whether they just FAIL to do so, but answers from them will NOT be answers to your question, unless your question happens to fit their canned responses.

At the moment they only support a very limited number of operating systems, and even after more than a YEAR of promises, they do not yet have ANY kind of support for Linux even though the Linux community has offered to produce the drivers FREE for them, if they would only supply the specs needed to write the drivers. They are obviously either completely incompetent, idiots, or being paid by Microsoft not to release linux drivers. (Or a combination of the above) I wouldn't trust them a bit at this point... Supposedly Linux drivers have been in the works for over a year... Who knows if they will ever get it right (Or windows 2000 drivers, or the ability to share from a wireless print server... You can't even share between SUPPORTED operating systems... and who knows if they will EVER support the next version of windows?)

I've also seen some complaints of problems with the print heads, not sure if that is a legitimate complaint, or just some users not doing something right. Since their support won't even get back to me to get some drivers so I can use the printer and test it myself, I can't verify or deny this.

Stay away from them and go for a good printer that has decent after-market cartridges available for them. Many Epson/Canon printers have good after-market inks available, since thier print heads are not integrated into the cartridges themselves. What is the best photo inkjet printer with lowest cost ink cartridges?
All inkjets suffer from the problem of a head clog if you don't use the printer for a long time. You should turn the printer on every day or two even if you don't print anything. It will keep the heads from clogging.

I recommend Epson cx series scanner/copier/printer (cx7400/cx8400) because of the print quality and the warranty. For a year Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. Ink cartridges are expensive, but you can get cheap replacements for $5 which work well here http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp

You can find the printers at buy.com, usually in the $60-$70 range BEFORE rebates, if any.
i used canon using bc21 ink. but when its cartridges were discontinued, or they stopped selling it, i have to replace the entire printer. i saved on ink by using compatible ink which cost about a tenth of the original one. i guess that's why they discontinued distribution because of this.
I have a HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer Scanner Fax. The replacement ink cartridges are expensive. However I would suggest getting a continuous ink system instead buying individual ink cartridges...it is equal to 61 cartridges of each color so the need to refill it is alot less often. They are easy to install and not messy at all...it took me about 5 minutes to get mine completely installed and when I need to refill it the tanks are outside of my printer so there is no need to remove the cartridges. The cartridges are also set with non-expiring chips so there is no need to reset the printer. I am very please with the quality of the ink also..It prints great looking photos printed on photo paper. It has saved me a fortune. The best place I found that has all printer models and I bought mine here http://www.printer-ink-cartridge-refills鈥?/a> Printer Ink Cartridge Refills and Continuous Ink Systems

Good luck and happy printing :-)
