Sound more like your print head has some clogged ink nozzles.

Run your head cleaning utility and print out a nozzle check pattern.

You'll find a great guide to clearing ink clogs at inkjet oasis.

My Epson Inkjet Printer doesn't print out black ink even after a new ink cartridge is installed!?

I have Epson CX5400 Inkjet printer. I purchased a staple's black ink useable for my printer but it didn't work. and i think it messed my printer up because even after we bought the Epson Ink cartridge, it still doesn't print out black ink. It says it's full, and it is correctly connected to the computer, and it shows no error messages, but it ONLY doesnt print out black ink. color seems to work fine. We tried head cleaning, reinstalling the cartridge, nozzle checks, and everything tons of times. PLEASE HELP!!!!!My Epson Inkjet Printer doesn't print out black ink even after a new ink cartridge is installed!?
these are nasty old problems - yuk. i do know one major problems with epson printers. you CANNOT uninstall and reinstall the ink carts. once you pierce the hole in the bottom of the cart, when u reinstall, it thinks you've reinstalled an empty or used cartridge. so once you install it, if it doesn't work you USUALLY can't take it out and reuse it.

Check with EPSON and see what they say. they cannot void your warranty for using non-epson inks UNLESS they supply you with the inks.

good luck - hope this helps. My Epson Inkjet Printer doesn't print out black ink even after a new ink cartridge is installed!?
after read all (question and answer) did u try every suggestion? if all fails, it will be print head problem.
Try using Rubbing Alchoal when you clean, it really gets that nitty gritty stuff out, it's possible it just gunked up in there somewhere. Make sure the cartridge is fully inserted and locked into place.

There is another possibilty to that the cartridge is either messed up and not getting a signal or the ink is dried up, either way try to take it back to staples and see if you can get a replacment.
Maybe one of the important printing component(s) is or are not working well like the printer head must have block the new ink from coming out and the clogging must have been very bad due to the old ink usage. Perhaps you should try sending it to a computer shop or somebody to repair the printer or get a new printer head. I own an epson printer once by it spoiled and couldn't be repaired so got to get a new printer. If worst come to worst, you may have to buy a printer but this time try buying HP printer instead.
there is a pin where you put in the cartridge.

put some serviets under the printing head(found under the cariage) and insert in the pin 10 ml of hot water.

also you should check if you have anything put on the top of the pin.

don't press on the pin too hard.

this unclogs the print head(i modifyed the message because i saw what the other guys said an most of it is not true)

believe me i modify those printers i know.

try it.

never failed me before

What is the best photo inkjet printer with lowest cost ink cartridges?

My experience: My first photo/inkjet was a Canon S800 ? Loved it, but when the cartridges needed to be replaced, they were over $20 a piece (6 cartridges). I got a Lexmart--cheap ink, but the quality sucked and I returned it within a few days. I splurged on a higher end Epson and discovered all the stories about the print heads drying up-making it useless were true.

I've used laser printers at work and don't think they print photos very well at all. What about having ink cartridges refilled? I've heard the ink isn't the same quality.

I don't want one that strictly prints photos because it will be used for printing several other types of projects, some text documents (very few). What is the best photo inkjet printer with lowest cost ink cartridges?
I would advise you to absolutely avoid Kodak... Regardless of what appears to be lower ink prices.'

Kodak's support system and drivers are probably worse than ***ANY*** other printer manufacturer in the industry, bar none. Forget sharing your printer to other computers, forget anything but a ';canned'; response to questions, I don't know if their support people CAN NOT read plain English questions, or whether they just FAIL to do so, but answers from them will NOT be answers to your question, unless your question happens to fit their canned responses.

At the moment they only support a very limited number of operating systems, and even after more than a YEAR of promises, they do not yet have ANY kind of support for Linux even though the Linux community has offered to produce the drivers FREE for them, if they would only supply the specs needed to write the drivers. They are obviously either completely incompetent, idiots, or being paid by Microsoft not to release linux drivers. (Or a combination of the above) I wouldn't trust them a bit at this point... Supposedly Linux drivers have been in the works for over a year... Who knows if they will ever get it right (Or windows 2000 drivers, or the ability to share from a wireless print server... You can't even share between SUPPORTED operating systems... and who knows if they will EVER support the next version of windows?)

I've also seen some complaints of problems with the print heads, not sure if that is a legitimate complaint, or just some users not doing something right. Since their support won't even get back to me to get some drivers so I can use the printer and test it myself, I can't verify or deny this.

Stay away from them and go for a good printer that has decent after-market cartridges available for them. Many Epson/Canon printers have good after-market inks available, since thier print heads are not integrated into the cartridges themselves. What is the best photo inkjet printer with lowest cost ink cartridges?
All inkjets suffer from the problem of a head clog if you don't use the printer for a long time. You should turn the printer on every day or two even if you don't print anything. It will keep the heads from clogging.

I recommend Epson cx series scanner/copier/printer (cx7400/cx8400) because of the print quality and the warranty. For a year Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. Ink cartridges are expensive, but you can get cheap replacements for $5 which work well here http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp

You can find the printers at buy.com, usually in the $60-$70 range BEFORE rebates, if any.
i used canon using bc21 ink. but when its cartridges were discontinued, or they stopped selling it, i have to replace the entire printer. i saved on ink by using compatible ink which cost about a tenth of the original one. i guess that's why they discontinued distribution because of this.
I have a HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer Scanner Fax. The replacement ink cartridges are expensive. However I would suggest getting a continuous ink system instead buying individual ink cartridges...it is equal to 61 cartridges of each color so the need to refill it is alot less often. They are easy to install and not messy at all...it took me about 5 minutes to get mine completely installed and when I need to refill it the tanks are outside of my printer so there is no need to remove the cartridges. The cartridges are also set with non-expiring chips so there is no need to reset the printer. I am very please with the quality of the ink also..It prints great looking photos printed on photo paper. It has saved me a fortune. The best place I found that has all printer models and I bought mine here http://www.printer-ink-cartridge-refills鈥?/a> Printer Ink Cartridge Refills and Continuous Ink Systems

Good luck and happy printing :-)

  • Best all-in-one inkjet printer that uses min. ink possible?

Hi, I used to use an monochrome laser printer for years, but now wanted to get an all-in-one inkjet printer that uses min. ink possible. As I've done several researches here and there, I found that the models that most people would recommend are either Canon or Epson, which both are big ';ink-drinkers';! I don't need a supreme color quality printer but just an average quality is alright for me. Any recommendations (fax would be an added bonus if included)? Or would you say invest a color laser printer and separate scanner/copier would be better? I'm talking about the advantages in the long run. Thank you.Best all-in-one inkjet printer that uses min. ink possible?
Inkjets are ink hogs, all of them. When you turn them on they initialize and use ink. When you clean the print heads/nozzles/jets it uses lots of ink. The only way around it, is to use a CISS. I give the link below. I have an Epson CX9400Fax, it's great and it's cheap. I bought it from the Epson clearance site. Epson.com. Here's a way to save lots of money on ink. http://www.inkproducts.com/ink-store/Best all-in-one inkjet printer that uses min. ink possible?
I don't know why you think that Epson printers are big ink drinkers, I bought a Epson DX3800 all in one printer about three and a half years ago for about 拢65 (so it has to be a lot cheaper now) and I think it's a great printer I have not had any trouble with it since I have had it, but bests of all I can get the compatible cartridges for it from 拢1.65 off the internet, if you do get a Epson get in touch and I will give you the address from were to get the cartridges.
Inkjet printers all seem to be ink hogs. I will be buying an HP all-in-one to go along with my HP Pavilion. I always buy a printer from the same company that made my computer. There seems to be less software conflicts. Separate printer and scanner does solve one major problem; if one crashes the other is still available--hopefully.
Here is a pretty good list of top all in one printers that includes HP, Epson, and Canon models:

I am a college freshman Which should i Buy an Inkjet , laserjet or something else (ink economy is a big factor

In college the one thing i also say is needed is a scanner, printer combo..but the scanner needs to have the ability to photocopy...You have no idea how nice it is to photocopy notes for backup..photos, etc etc..but as for the kinda ink, you can actually make it so it uses less lnk, makes it a bit lighter in the end, but saves ink as wellI am a college freshman Which should i Buy an Inkjet , laserjet or something else (ink economy is a big factor
I would buy an all-in-one. Since you are in college, you may need to scan and copy.

Also there are different websites where you can order ink cheaper. My fav is http://www.printpal.comI am a college freshman Which should i Buy an Inkjet , laserjet or something else (ink economy is a big factor
If you print a lot Laser printer will always be cheaper. It prints like published pages and is faster.
Inkjet will be your best bet. cheapest for sure.

Looking for an inkjet that is used mostly for b&w. Cost of ink a major consideration. Any suggestions?

Any Epson printer will do depending on your budget.

I just put a new black ink cartridge in my computer today, it is a hp 695 inkjet printer?

it was working fine today and not a thing wrong with it. But now when I go to print the document, I can't see nothing, but really really faint almost invisible words can someone help me out here?? Thanks to all those that can help:)I just put a new black ink cartridge in my computer today, it is a hp 695 inkjet printer?
Go to Control Panel then Printers. Right click on your printer and the left click on Properties. Click on Printing Preferences. Look in there for Maintenance or something similiar. What you want to do is clean or prime or align or do all of them. Print a test page. If it is still not perfect run Maintenance again. May take 2 or 3 times. Maybe even just once. Another problem may be the ink cartridge. What is the date on it? Was it brand new and sealed?I just put a new black ink cartridge in my computer today, it is a hp 695 inkjet printer?
    Invisible words? Oh my!
Did you try to print a test page?

Did you remove the little plastic strip over the end of the cartridge before installing?
If it was printing fine for a while after you put the new cartridge in, then it must me out of place (popped out of place). Just push it in a little bit.

If you refilled it, then cover up the top. Sometimes ink dries out.

Print a test page to see if the printer recognizes the new cartridge correctly.
Pop the ink cartridge out and pop it back in place. Do whatever print test page the computer asks you to do.

If it still doesn't work after you try all these suggestions, I would call the company and ask them if it is possible that you bought a cartridge that didn't have any ink in it. (Check ink levels if your printer allows you to do this. Some tell you what your ink levels are).
Check to be sure you have the correct ink catridge first. Be sure that the cartridge is properly installed.

Normally when you install a new catridge the printer will automatically propmpt yo to print a test page. If that hasn't happened open the trouble shoot section within the printer software and look for the toolbox. This should give you further instructions on how to diagnose the problem.

Sounds to me like the cratridge is not properly installed or the wrong cartridge.

Color laser REFURBISHED vs inkjet (under $1k) compare quality? ink$? reliable? tshirt laser transfers?

Refurbished printers are good, but not all printers are equal depending on brand... especially on eBay. Look at the seller's feedback and return policy. I have a few refurbished computer products and they act like brand new.

I have a epson stylus C86 Inkjet and it says magenta ink is out but I can hear ink inside when shaking it.?

I doubt that you can hear ink sloshing around in there.

Replace the cartridge.I have a epson stylus C86 Inkjet and it says magenta ink is out but I can hear ink inside when shaking it.?
If it's not a separate Magenta-Only cartridge, then you're out of magenta but still have cyan and yellow..... Just get a new cartridge.I have a epson stylus C86 Inkjet and it says magenta ink is out but I can hear ink inside when shaking it.?
You ink level is just page counter is is completely possible that you have ink left it it.. However, you also have an epson, which will completely shut down and stop printing when it thinks it is out of ink.

You need to replaced the cartridge regardless of whether or not it is empty. That or buy a chip re-setter.
you might have other inks in there like if its a cartrige that has 3 diif. inks and only red is out

  • HP Black Inkjet Cartridge Method of refilling. Ink also does not come from head.?

    Hi Pretty,

At my site below under Computer Talk is a section on printers and troubleshooting. Included is the do and don't of refilling cartridges. Hope this helpsHP Black Inkjet Cartridge Method of refilling. Ink also does not come from head.?
need to know which hp black you're trying to refill. there's at least four different methods.

if ink is not coming out, try putting the ink port down into a dish of hot tap water for a minute, then dry gently and try printing again (unless it's an 02 black).HP Black Inkjet Cartridge Method of refilling. Ink also does not come from head.?
if the ink does not come from the head you may have a defective cart. you can try to revive the ink

take the cartridge and hold it over a steam escaping from a boiling teakettle. this will clear ANY dried ink.

HOWEVER: if you do this too long the cartridge will get ruined. the printhead on a lexmark cartridge is very touchy and could melt together if you make this attempt for too long.

If you have had the cartridge out of the printer too long, it will clog and ruin anyways.

Ink jet cartridges are very moody. sometimes you can refill one several times, other times they will not respond at all to refilling.

Once you take a cart out of the packaging, it needs to be put in the machine almost immediately after removing the protective tape. once you remove it from the machine, if you want to refill it, then, you need to put it in a cartridge clip, or put the protective tape back on.

my honest suggestion is that the cartridge is shot and needs replaced. possibly because the printheads have melted. printheads will melt together if the cartridge was run empty prior to refilling, or just running out of ink.

As for what i've done, i have held my cart over the steam and it has worked on some, and not on others. you could also dip it in hot distilled water. take a small amount of distilled water, just enough to cover the bottom of a small bowl, hold the cart so that the printhead is down towards the water (duh??) and TAP. make sure the water is hot, but NOT boiling, or the printheads will melt. i have left my cart in the water to soak, and the sponge inside actually drank the water and then the cart was ruined.

good luck. i hope this helped.
Personally I think it would much better cost %26amp; time wise just to purchase a compatible cartridge at Office Depot. Plus, you'll get a guarantee!

    TIPS:

1.) Do not put rubbing alcohol on the printhead, it could ruin it.

2.) Take the cartridge and hold it over a steam escaping from a boiling teakettle. This will clear ANY dried ink.

Generic Ink Cartridges (Calidad) for Epson inkjet printer (TX600)?

Has anyone used Calidad generic cartridges in the Epson printer TX600?

Did they have trouble or were no problems?

This is not the type of printer where the print heads are separate from the ink reserve. It is a regular inkjet with cartridge and printhead together.

PS Im not worried about photo quality prints as its just for study purposes.Generic Ink Cartridges (Calidad) for Epson inkjet printer (TX600)?
Don't know Calidad but i do know Epsons! Good Epsons have a smaller nozzle size than anyone Else's, they are easily clogged when not cleaned, not used often or just plane abused! The genuine Epson ink is finer than most other inks, so a ';generic'; ink MAY...and i emphasize may, cause a problem. I had the older x600 years ago and did a lot of printing on it...mostly manuscripts and news articles, but often hi-gloss pictures as well. I started using generic ink to save money and it worked for some time,,but..the times when it ';crapped out'; it was due to ink problems. I would have to disassemble the printer to get to the print head to clean...the ';down time'; wasn't worth the money i saved! You could use the generic ink ';in a pinch'; but I certainly don't recommend using them full time! especially on Epsons! Do I still use Epson printers?...I'm very happy with my newer Artisan 800..!

Hi Great Days, it's a good idea to use remanufactured ink cartridges, but I think that if you refill your own cartridges you will even save more money, hope this helped and good luck.
try cd-r king. they sell ink king there. plus, they're in almost every mall. the inks are cheap, too.

one problem, though. the salesladies do not refill your cartridges. they sell only DIY refilling kits or raw inks.

Is there something special about ink used in inkjet printer cartriges?

What kind of ink is used in printer cartridges. There are refill systems for refilling your own cartridges, that cost a fraction of new cartridges. So maybe we can go it one better and buy refill ink wholesale and save even more?

I used to buy regular cartridges till one day I pried the top off of one just to see what was inside ,what I found was that the stain in the foam left behind by the ink showed that it was less that 1/3 full when new.. It's bad enough that they charge you an arm and a leg for the little buggers, but to only partialy fill them with ink is a real kick in the Dupa. Probably some sort of creative revenue enhancement scheme? Is there something special about ink used in inkjet printer cartriges?
It's true a lot of manufacturers make money on the ink. I just buy compatibles, I haven't had any problems with them and at the same time I don't have to deal with the mess of refilling it myself. I usually go to this website (www.thecartridgefamily.net) and buy, I call and one of the reps there usually gives me a better price. They also recycle my cartridges for free. I'm happy with them.

http://thecartridgefamily.net/index.php/鈥?/a>Is there something special about ink used in inkjet printer cartriges?
I got the black and colored ink kits at of all places a big lots store. I htink I paid $15.00 for both kits and They work just fine. The cartridges do wear out and there are chips on the cartridge that have an expiration date. Boy they want that money!! If you do refill read the directions and wear old or protective clothes in case of spills. Good luck
';a kick in the dupa';? man, i havent heard that for years. my mom used to tell me thats what i was going to get when my dad got home from work. anyway, about the ink...you know that they make all their money selling ink for their printers. i have been buying mine over the web for years with no problems at all for 1/3 the cost. its a real rip-off.

I am unable to remove my blk ink cartridge from my color slot in my hp 5510 inkjet printer. help please!!!?

I have seen a few of these.

Get a small but long flathead screwdriver. You need to pry up the top of the holder, while you pull down and out with the cartridge. There is a notch in there that guides the color into the color and black into the black. BUT BE WARNED, too much force can damage the cartridge and/or the printer.

I know I can clean print heads and make test prints but the problem is so bad that I waste so much expensive ink that it isn't worth the trouble. • Cost in ink when printing A4 colour images with an Inkjet?

I want to print a lot of colourful cards. Using a professional printer or a laser printer are currently out of the question. I will use my own HP PSC1610 Inkjet printer which requires two seperate cartridges; tri-colour (No 344) and black (No 338).

    My problem is, I want to firmly understand the cost of ink per print before starting. While I understand that ink usage will depend on picture colour etc, I really want to know about information for an average image on normal, smooth card. So my questions are;

How many A4 pages of full colour picture (normal quality= 600dpi) can I print with a full cartridge?

How significantly does the Ink Volume setting under Advanced Features vary the amount of ink? (Personally I struggle to see any variation in print.)

Thanks in advanceCost in ink when printing A4 colour images with an Inkjet?
It depends not only on color saturation, but how much you paid for the ink. The simplest way to save on printing costs is to get the cheapest (quality) inks you can find, both black and colour.

Second, which you're already on to, is to choose the lowest quality setting that produces acceptable results. This might mean reducing to 300 dpi from 600 dpi--there's not a lot of visible difference unless you have large photos or grapics with thin line details.

That said, until you actually do a print run until the ink goes out, then divide by the total number of prints yielded, you won't know exact costs for your particular print job. If you pay $25 for a CYM and $25 for Black cartridge, and you get 100 acceptable-quality prints until both cartridges run out (enough to make quality unaccpetable), then cost is 50 cents per page, for example ($50 in ink, 100 copies). The answer that guessed 25 cents to $1 per page really isn't far off--because we can't see your image or know how low quality setting is acceptable to you.

Also, choose your paper wisely. The right paper can make your job look 50% better. Bright white semi-gloss cardstock, or other stock that fits your needs, can make inkjet print look a lot sharper, cleaner, and more professional. Using the right paper is one of the most cost-effective ways to produce quality results.

I hope this helps!Cost in ink when printing A4 colour images with an Inkjet?

Does anyone know the difference between Canon PG-30 ink and PG-40 ink? (for the iP1800 inkjet printer)?

Are replacement ink cartridges for inkjet printers a complete con????

the full cost to replace my Lexmark ink is 拢18 for black and 拢18 for colour, I usually just use black. The refill place is cheaper but still not cheap at about 拢12 for black. However this time I bought a DIY kit from Asda or 拢5.60, containing bottles of black in, sringe, stoppers etc. to fill the cartridge myself, thinking it would be fiddly I tried it, and it worked perfectly and I only used part of one bottle of ink, leaving me EIGHT refills left, so the equivalent ink in new cartidges would have cost me over 拢160 - a reminder this set cost me less then 拢6. Am I ruining my printer by using this method or are ne cartidiges (and refill shops) just a total con???????Are replacement ink cartridges for inkjet printers a complete con????
You're probably not ruining your printer.

The printer market is very competitive for the price of the printer, so manufacturers cut the price very low, and make money by pricing the ink high. This works for them, because most people don't look at the cost of the ink when they choose a printer.

If your refill ink is low quality, then you may start to clog the printer, and possibly lower-quality prints. Some cartridges (e.g. HP) include the print head, which is intended to be disposable, so re-filling those can be riskier. But others (e.g. Epson) have the print head in the printer, and it is therefore intended to last a long time, so less risky to use refills. Are replacement ink cartridges for inkjet printers a complete con????
I have found that ';compatible ';cartridges just do not do the job properly. It is a false economy, often thye don't work and equally often they are only partly full.

I use genuine cartridges only, but get them from http://www.ebuyer.com They are much cheaper because they are the starting point in the supply chain to the UK shops
It's true that cartridge ink is usually overpriced - I've even heard of a set of replacement cartridges costing more than the original printer! If I remember correctly, the printer was sold with the included cartridges only half full.

On the other hand, cheaper ink may fade quicker or something like that, and using it probably invalidates your printer warranty.
Your method is perfectly okay. Just you can't refill it more that 5-6 times.

And the ink is not that good.
I refill my own too.. Much cheaper..

Laser or Inkjet? which is economical in term of ink?

I see in the market that laser printers' cost get cheaper and closer to the inkjets. I think about buying a laser printer but I want to now if it is a cost effective in terms of cartridge and ink price.

Did anyone used both laser and inkjet to compare the ongoing costs?Laser or Inkjet? which is economical in term of ink?
Laser is much more economical in terms of amount of pages per dollar that can be printed. However, the toner cartridges generally cost more but last longer and the initial printer cost is higher. I use laser printers almost exclusively now because I have found that I can save several hundred dollar a year by doing so. I print somewhere around 25,000 pages per year and usually use about 10 laser cartridges to do so where as I would use around 30 or so ink cartridges. Laser is much better in terms of cost if you print large amounts, however, if you print small amounts I would defiantly go with ink jet.

I have several Dell 1110 laser printers which you can pick up for $99 and the cartridges last for around 2,000 pages or so. The link below shows Dell's selection of B/W Laser printers. I also have a Samsung laser printer. I get about 3,000 pages per $70 cartridge with it.

Good luck in making your decision.

P.S. Ink Jet printers are headed the way of Dot Matrix printers due to the reduction in the price of Laser Printers. The only Ink Jet printers that will be around in 10 years will be for photo printing.

P.P.S. Also your ratings that the manufatures give you are on a 5% coverage basis. A page of double spaced 12 point font is close to 5%.Laser or Inkjet? which is economical in term of ink?
Laser printers and toners are more expensive than inkjet printers and cartridges but page by page lasers are more economical. To receive the cost benefit of a laser printer you would need to print hundreds of pages consistently not just 20 or 30 a month.
Laser printers are for extensive office work. If you do tons of printing Laser is more economical. But if it is for pictures, printing out of the home ink jet is better. The drums for the laser printers are between a hundred to two hundred dollars a time plus the laser printers are twice or three times as expensive as ink jet. Check out Canon they have the best in both categories.
I did, and I'm convinced that it's hard to beat a black and white laser printer. The last one I bought was a Lexmark E120n for about $100 and it even had an ethernet network server interface built right in. You can get remanufactured cartridges for about $45 each and they're no hassle like the injet cartridges can be. Even color lasers are becoming available more cheapley as you know, but I'm sure the cartridges must be expensive, and you can always use your old inkjet for any color printing needs. Another good and inexpensive brand is Samsung.
    laser
(Sheesh! I went to look at our records then came back to the keyboard and couldn't find your question for awhile!) For us, inkjet. My spouse is a photographer. Lots of intense color prints (photo cartridge often, so back and forth...). We use the store-brand instead of the manufacturer brand of cartridge, and have learned to wait for sales and *not* take the printer's word for it on gripes of ';low on ink';. Either way, laser or inkjet, they surely are expensive, though, groan...I guess ';cost per'; depends on what you're printing.

Will the cannon inkjet printer print, if i replace ink absorber? As it says-ink absorber is FULL, cannot print?

No it will not solve it on its own. The problem is the printer needs to be given a code to reset it when once the waste ink tank full message appears and the waste tank has been replaced. Without resetting it it still will not print. Each model will have a separate code and that is why the message usually says to call for a service. They will not give you the code as there is good money in it for them to do it themselves. There are some models' codes on the Internet but as you did not state the model I could not try to find one that would help. Without the reset I am afraid it will not budge.

That is the waste pad basically. It just a felt sponge that sits right underneath the priting mech. You need to reset that 'felt pad' counter. I don't exactly know how to do it for a Canon printer, but I know how to do it for an Epson printer. You may want to research on Google for

When you will fulfill the requirement to change the ink absorber then printer must print.

  • Does anyone know how to override the time dated '; your ink cartridge has expired'; for a HP 2230 inkjet printer?

This sucks...... level shows 3/4 full, yet printer will not print... How do I beat them at their own game???? thanks, angry, very angry....

Does anyone know how to override the time dated '; your ink cartridge has expired'; for a HP 2230 inkjet printer?
Option 1: Change the printer driver!!!

Instead of using the driver downloaded from HP.com or from the manufacturer's CD - I used the Microsoft XP built-in driver for HP Business InkJet 2200/2250 (HPA) (slightly different model as you see - same functionality though...)

Worked like a charm! No more messages, that the cartridges have expired, when trying to print from a computer.

Make sure to delete the original HP driver first, before installing the one from MS - for the HP BIJ 2200/2250. Ignore any MS OS warnings, that this driver may not work.

    Option 2:

Since the date chips look at the computer clock, all you need to do is set it back one year. You can always return it after you are done printing. Bit of an inconvenience, but you'll get the most out of the cartridges. HP claims it chips them because expired cartridges can damage the printer. What a kind-hearted company, concerned you might damage your printer and then you wouldn't need to buy more of their overpriced ink cartridges.Does anyone know how to override the time dated '; your ink cartridge has expired'; for a HP 2230 inkjet printer?

Ink life depends on several factors:

    1) Quality of picture

    2) Quality of ink (brand name and store brand do differ; I can usually get more prints out of a off brand, but quality sometimes suffers)

    3) Amount of ink in cartridge (some printers can use two different cartridges and only difference in the cartridges is the amount of ink)

    4) Amount of specific color used in pictures (if using a tricolor ink cartridge)

I have a HP Photosmart 330 series printer uses the HP 95 tricolor cartridge. I can usually get about 100 4x6 photos out of it, but most of the time, I run out of one color before the other two (which means I have to throw away a cartridge with usable ink).INK LIfe of INkJet printer?

You cannot. HP has a smart chip in there which interferes with the software of the printer when it reaches it's expiration date.

The only way to resolve this issue is to unfortunately replace the cartridge.

What is better inkjet or lazerjet and which one wastes less ink?

Inkjet and Laserjet is two totally different type of printer. Inkjet use liquid ink and laserjet use carbon toner to print.

Printing cost wise, Laserjet can print at least 1000 pages per toner cartridge (Black %26amp; White printing), Inkjet will probably print maximum 200 pages per set of ink cartridge (Mixed color printing). But if you compare color Inkjet with color Laserjet, the price of the color toner will freak you off.

Anyway, suggest you to buy 2 printer, Inkjet for photo/image printing and Laser for text printing. And for color Laser printer, I think only graphic specialist will need that. What is better inkjet or lazerjet and which one wastes less ink?
It really depends on your needs. You need to answer a few questions about how you will be using the printer:

How much printing do you do (quite a bit, occasionally)?

What kind of printing do you do (photos, color brochures, business proposal, black ink only)?

Do you want color or black (most inkjet printers come standard as color now, and the majority of laser are headed that direction also)?

Do you want an all-in-one multifunctional machine (do you want it to print, scan, copy and fax)?

    What’s your budget?

The major difference between inkjet printers and toner printers that most consumers should focus on are the cartridges used in the machine and the page yields the cartridges provide (yield is a term the manufactures use to qualify how many pages the cartridge will print on a average 5% page coverage before it runs out). Inkjets take a small “ink” cartridge with actual liquid ink. The Laser printers take “toner” cartridges with a super fine color powder. The inkjet printers and “ink” cartridges are much cheaper than the laser printers and “toner” cartridges. However, don’t let the higher upfront price on the printer and cartridges turn you away from the laser. Laser printer prices are coming down. An inkjet cartridge will traditionally have 400-600 page yields, where the laser printers will carry any where from 2,500-20,000+ page yields. So over time if you do a lot of printing and you use an Inkjet you’ll be constantly purchasing cartridges for the machine. Where if you use a laser printer you’ll pay a higher initial price for the cartridge but save money over time because you’re not constantly spending $25-35 every week, month etc. Laser toner cartridges can also be recylced and you can purchase like new remanufactured (recycled) cartridges for a cheaper price.

The laser printer is going to print faster and quieter, and take a lot less maintenance and service in the long run. The one thing the inkjet printer has over the laser printer is photos. So far, ink creates the best quality photos; however it also takes a lot of ink to print the photos causing the need to replace the cartridges. What is better inkjet or lazerjet and which one wastes less ink?
LasetJet is more expensive to acquire but it can take upto a year for the ink to run out. Inkjet printers are cheaper but inks can run out within 2-3 months. I would prefer the LaserJet.

However, how long it takes for your ink to be consumed will depend on how you use it. Naturally if you use your ink for graphics-intensive tasks, inkjet printers can be consumed very quickly as compared to mostly text-based work.

  • Help with inkjet printers 鈥?buying ink.?

I need to pick up an inkjet for color prints and am trying to decide between two different types. One uses separate C/M/Y cartridges that are $15 each = $45 for all three. The other uses an all in one cartridge that costs between $25 and $35, depending on the capacity. However, I assume you replace the whole cartridge when one color runs out.

Are separate C/M/Y cartridges cheaper in the long run than an all in one color cartridge or vice versa? Any thoughts on printer ink appreciated 鈥?I hate the way they market these things with proprietary cartridges to maximize profit.Help with inkjet printers 鈥?buying ink.?
Seperate colour cartridges should work out cheaper and you may possibly get good results from trying to reink them, I have never had good results when trying to reink combined colour cartridges.

If you are doing a lot of printing it might find it cheaper to use a laser printer rather than an inkjet, but that may not suit the media you are trying to print on.Help with inkjet printers 鈥?buying ink.?
Buying separate ink cartridges is definitely the way to go. Most people use more black than any other color and then usually more blue. Yellow seems to get used the least. As for which printer, I recommend Epson cx series scanner/copier/printer (cx7400/cx8400) because of the print quality and the warranty. For a year Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. Ink cartridges are expensive, but you can get cheap replacements which work well at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp

You can find the printers at buy.com, usually in the $60-$70 range BEFORE rebates, if any.
What kind of cartridges depends on your printer.

I am not familiar with any pritner where you can use either a ';all in one'; OR individual.

You have to replace the cartridge with one that is compatible to the printer you have. There are many on-line printer sites that usually have a ';better'; deal than from the manufacture. I have been using http://www.ldproducts.com/ with no problems.

And yes, when one color runs out the cartridges need to be replaced. I have a Canon printer with 4 color cartridges, and they all seem to run out about the same time, however.

It's possible that the cartridge chip has to be reset in order to work with your printer. A lot of inkjet cartridges have chips that are required for the printer to function properly. When you install aftermarket (knock-off) cartridges, they sometimes do not have this chip and when they do, most often they are not correctly programmed to work with the printer. There are ways to reset these chips to get them to work. This you'll have to search online or ask the vendor you purchased your cartridges from to get instructions specifically for your printer and cartridge.I am have hp inkjet printer with refillable catriges but the ink status is showing an warning symbol.?
It will continue to show that status message. The printer has memory that remembers those cartridges as empty. The printer will forever remember that electronic encoding and register it as a used cartridge. Just deal with the annoyance click OK and continue to print.
The warning is an indication that ink levels are very low, or the cartridge is completely dried up . You should refill the cartridges as soon as you can.

The transfer papers (i.e. inkjet transfer paper, laser printer) are made specific to the type of printer you use so the ink adheres to the paper. Should not bleed if you print from your inkjet and if you're using the correct type. When you buy paper, it should also give you instructions on how to use them.

I bought inkjet transfer paper from www.t-shirtproducts.com and they rock! I even ironed on to white t-shirts and they didnt bleed at all! Paper is high-quality and cheap too. I've tried paper from the store (HP) and they suck because the ink faded after just 1 wash!

Which is the best type of printers inkjet, laser, led-lcd, impact, solid ink, dye sublimation?

It depends on your need and your volume. Lasers have sharper text and are generally faster than inkjets. While toner cartridges are more expensive, they print more pages, so the cost per page is lower. But you pay more up front. Inkjets are better for photos and cheaper for low volume. Personally, I use both. I have an inkjet for photos, a color laser for high volume color jobs and a black laser for regular text. I use the black laser most often.

You can get a pretty good Samsung color laser for $150 or a really good color laser today for about $300. A set of 4 cartridges for the Samsung is under $100. Toner cartridges for the other are about $200 but they last for about 10,000 pages. You can also get refills for about $50 on ebay.

As for inkjets: as someone who was in the computer hardware business for years (though I rarely sold printers since I couldn't compete with the crazy rebates) I have always recommended Epson. The print quality is excellent, even on plain paper. I have photos I printed on a 640 about ten years ago hanging in my office which still look good, though not as good as the ones from the CX8400 on glossy paper. The warranty is excellent. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. I had one customer who needed this. He called one afternoon and had the replacement two days later. Another client bought a Canon. It needed two repairs within a few months. Each time it was taken to the repair center, then picked up a few days later. This client runs a specialty printing business and this really hurt. They have since bought an Epson CX5000 and have had no down time since.

All name brand ink is expensive, but you can get cheap new replacement cartridges for Epson (not refills which I never recommend) for under $5 at http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp

The CX8400 scanner/copier/printer was on sale at circuitcity.com for $60 with free shipping. It uses 3 colors plus black.

The RX595 scanner/copier/printer also prints on DVDs. It uses 5 colors plus black and has even higher photo quality. It's on sale at circuitcity.com for $80 after $55 instant rebate.

I have been using compatible ink for about ten years and I have Epson printers almost that old which are still going strong. But you have to be careful. If your printer is manufactured after March 2007, Epson programmed it to reject compatibles. A lot of compatibles don't work, including many of the cheap ones found on ebay. They have regular cartridges but they also have unique 2-piece cartridges where the ink is in a separate tank. When it's empty, you pop out the tank and replace it with a new one. The chip resets to full. It's a real money saver. It's like refilling cartridges only without the mess.Anyone have any experience -- positive or negative -- with non-OEM ink for an Epson inkjet photo printer?
Here's what you need. It will save you tons of money, never change a cartridge again and always have ink. It will pay for itself in a month. Epson's are the best printers. All printers have or will have chipped cartridges and everyone will be screwed paying high prices. I have the CISS and it's my time to screw them. Get one here: http://www.inkproducts.com/ink-store/

Suggest any chemical, acid or agent or method to liquid dried Ink in Nozzle of Inkjet HP Cartride.?

Method of opening Inkjet HP Cartridge body.Suggest any chemical, acid or agent or method to liquid dried Ink in Nozzle of Inkjet HP Cartride.?
you cannot effectively liquify dried ink as the tank and sponge system prohibits you from doing do effectively without residue. Also, ink has a very specific viscosity that will not be able to be reached.

If you just have a dried print head you can free that by soaking it in blue Windex. The will dissolve any ink residue. However in the case of severely dry cartridges you are best to start with a new cartridge.Suggest any chemical, acid or agent or method to liquid dried Ink in Nozzle of Inkjet HP Cartride.?
Usually you can solve this by boiling some water, get a container and pour about a quarter of an inch in the container, now dip the cartridge in and out of the water until you see a black cloud, now take a paper towel fold it in half and dab the cartridge on it, not in the same spot so you can see it get better and do the same with the color. If you are using pigmented ink just do the same thing but add a cap full of ammonia to the boiling water.
    There are 2 types of ink, Colour is ';Dyebased';, Black is ';Pigment Based';

For Dyebased, just soak the printhead section in water.

For Pigment Based, a weak solution of ammonia

Opening a cartridge is a waste of time, when they are open, they are finished, well broken!

If Cart has not been used for...months... then seal in plastic box with cart OUT of solution (support on old biro's?), then leave in a warm place to sweat it out.

Look at this site, they have 'bottom fill' tool for black carts, and 'priming' tool for colour carts, which are useful to get the nozzles clear, using a few cc's of the right ink. Also shows how to 'open' cart to refil.

If refilling colour, I always 'gravity fill', by putting large, open syringe into cart, then putting the ink into the open end, and allow to drain in, stops air bubbles etc.

Can any1 suggest where i can go to buy a printer that prints white ink ie inkjet please help?

Dave: ';White'; to the printer means ';nothing.'; It will not print anything in areas designated as white -the color of the paper is what appears there, so if the paper is white, you've got white.

So, what happens when you want the general background of a picture to be yellow, but there is bright white somewhere in the art? In that case, you use bright white paper, and include the yellow background as part of the art.

In the ';real world'; of printing -on commercial printing presses, rarely is anything ever pure white or black when a photograph is printed, for example. Rather, white is actually a very light gray, and black is a very dark gray. Can any1 suggest where i can go to buy a printer that prints white ink ie inkjet please help?

because we're trying to make an cheaper alternative for printer inks,.,.help! please,.,.=cCan you actually make an alternative ink (using indian ink method) for an inkjet printer?
Inks are formulated specifically for the print heads they go in. What you are suggesting would likely ruin the print head. If cost is the primary consideration, get a printer that has lower ink replacement cost. I bought a Kodak printer recently, and the color refill costs under $15 and the high capacity black is under $10. Reasonable enough. Can you actually make an alternative ink (using indian ink method) for an inkjet printer?
Printer ink is about the most expensive fluid on the planet, beating prize bull semen for price per mil.

Refill ink much cheaper but print quality is generally poorer or not as long lasting.

As the printhead rapidly heats the ink to make the jet fire its thermal properties are also important.

Some of them maybe use pizzo electric transducers to fire the jet in which case they might be easier to use different ink formulations.

The main problem is getting a very high colour density in the ink so it doesn't over wet or spread on the paper, yet keep it runny enough so it doesn't clog the printhead, and is dark enough to read.

The other problem is the inkjet hole size keeps getting smaller as the print resolutions get higher.

At least now you can get lasers quite cheap.

I suppose you just need to get lots of print carts and try making some ink and re-filling them and see how it goes.

    Good luck

Inkjet Printer Cartridge Dried Ink Diluter? Ammonia does not work. Suggest Diluter?

Water! Most inkjet inks are water soluble........I washed out a set of cartridges with water once using a syringe and it worked well.

Try wetting a document that was printed with this printer and see if the ink runs....if it does then water is the solvent you should use.

If the ink has only dried around the nozzles, get yourself a ball of cotton wool, soak it in water and let the nozzle face rest on the wet cotton wool for 20 minutes to loosen the dried ink. Obviously do not get the electrical connections wet or covered in ink but other than that it should work wellInkjet Printer Cartridge Dried Ink Diluter? Ammonia does not work. Suggest Diluter?

It really doesn't matter, if you turn it off, every time you turn it on it will clean itself. If you leave it on, every so often it will clean itself.

Contious ink supply system is made for inkjet printer. Any such thing exists for laser printer?

No, all inkjet printers have some type of cartridge internally and most of them don't last very long. This is due to the likelyhood that the printer is being used in a home where usage is at a minimum. If you want a nearly endless supply of ink, you need a laser printer. Some of them have toner cartriges that can print 25,000 pages (black only) on 5% coverage. The printers are expensive but they cost less to print and use the toner.Contious ink supply system is made for inkjet printer. Any such thing exists for laser printer?
No, because lasers generally print thousands and thousands of pages before needing a new toner cart. Inkjets needs new cart as soon as 300 pages.

Can we use eco sol ink in inkjet printer?

You can always try it out when the current cartage runs out. All you can loose is a empty cartage.

One thing though make sure the printer you are using is not HP or Epson. Emson have a chip inside cartage to stop you from refilling. Hp have a plastic bag inside the cartage which is difficult to refill.

So Far I found Canon has best cartages if you want to refill.

I just want an inkjet printer for occasional use-which is the best in terms of cheap ink cartridges?

megatoners.com has cheap/compatible ink for most ALL printers. if you find a printer you like, before buying check out the site just to see if they have what you are in need of. i have bought from them before, while it is not name brand it is good ink and worked just as well as name brand and a fraction of the cost.

I can tell you one NOT to buy: A Lexmark series 2690. You can only get the cartridges on-line from the manufacturer.

Do inkjet printers use colour ink to print grey?

I need to print out lots of trial pages and I wondered whether it would be worth it to try and save my colour ink by printing out everything grey... but if the printer uses a mixture of the colour ink to create grey, this won't work... any help?Do inkjet printers use colour ink to print grey?
Unless the colour is 100% black or text, most printers will use the cyan, magenta and yellow colours to create a ';muddy black';.

Your printer should allow you to ';print all colors as black';, or more precisely, shades of grey.

Click ';Print'; and then the ';Properties'; button to open the printer settings panel. Look for a small check box that disables colour printing.

That should do the trick.Do inkjet printers use colour ink to print grey?
It depends. Usually, the printer (in windows) has a setting that says print black and white or grayscale. If you select that, it should not use color inks. However, if you print grays in color mode, it usually will use some color ink.
Unfortunately almost all ink jet printers use a mix of their cartridges to print.

Print yourself out a black bar and take a close look at it, if you see any blue, then you may as well use colour.
It depends on the printer. If the printer has a black ink cartridge it typically uses just black. If it doesnt have black and just the other colors then it will use all the colors to create the grey.
no need...... Black and white ( or even Black only) Ink can produce gray colour =3

Dell 720 Inkjet Printer won't recognize black ink cartridge?

Yeah, so I recently got both my ink cartridges refilled at Walgreens and I put them back in to the printer. The color cartridge works fine but it keeps saying that the black cartridge isn't in the printer and when I try to print something that is just black, it comes out blank. Help, please.Dell 720 Inkjet Printer won't recognize black ink cartridge?
There's really only one way I can think of to tell if it's the cartridge and unfortunately that is to buy a new cartridge and try it. If it works, take the refilled one back to Walgreens for a refund on the refill.

Another thought is to see if there is ink on the electrical contacts (not the holes where the ink comes out) on the cartridge on maybe in the printer where the cartridge sits. Just wipe it off with a dry lint-free cloth.

Also if the ink ran out in the black cartridge, some printers will not let you install the same cartridge back in the printer. The printer logs the serial number of the cartridge and is looking for a new number. This is a scheme on the part of the manufacturer to get you to buy a new cartridge instead of refilling.Dell 720 Inkjet Printer won't recognize black ink cartridge?
That is really the best answer for your question. Usually, ink is scattered on the electrical connection causing some malfunctions. The best solutions wipe it off. Simple and neat. Try these, in this order:

    1. Run nozzle cleaning

    2. I'd suggest uninstalling and then reinstalling the printer driver.

    3. Take a paper towel dampened with warm water and wipe it over the the area where the ink is dispensed on the bottom of the cartridge until ink seems to be flowing freely. Then pop it back into the printer and use it as normal.

Unfortunately, most cartridges can not be refilled because of a microchip on the cartridge itself.

You are better off just purchasing generic cartridges rather than refilling them.

You do not need to purchase the higher priced brand cartridges. We purchase the off brand Epson cartridges for our printer. I get them for about $7 or $10, plus I do not have worry about the hassle of refilling them.

Despite what some people say.. it does NOT void your warranty to use off brand cartridges. I found an article about this online if you want to read more about this, go to cheapinkcartridges.com and click on the FAQ link.

There are hundreds of sites online to purchase these cartridges.
No i have tried that and dont work. You need the special refill inks you can find in the market
i expect it's the wrong viscosity and maybe oil based........ i wouldn't try it !!
Simply refilling a cartridge yourself will void all warranties on the cartridge. Using a non-manufacturer's cartridge will void the printer warranty in most cases.

Using the wrong ink can cause all sorts of trouble. The ink might run right through the cartridge and spill inside the printer.

My brother had a $450 printer that wouldn't recognize that there was paper in it because the sensor was covered in spilled ink.

Can you really afford to take the chance that this is a good idea?

Why not use food coloring or colored water it it looks like printer ink?

    It's your $$...

Here's something I've been repeatedly told not to do, but I've done and it works:

I take a Q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol, and swab the ink surface of the cartridge, as well as the point of contact in the printer. Then I print a few pages of type, each page comes out progressively better.

A printer should be used at least once weekly, or it dries up on you.

Try lineing your ink and if it dose when you go to the printer there is a few things you have to do before it prints. Or it could be your plugged the cables in wrong. Or you need to have it checked out.
a warm wet paper towel on caratge for a few seconds, U will C the ink then dry it %26amp; put it back in.
Printers have their own built-in cleaning functions -- you should refer to the printer's manual to find out how to start the cleaning process on your particular printer.

If you haven't used it in a few months, chances are very good that the printer heads need to be cleaned.
turn it on and press ctrl+p, preference, maintenance
The print cartridge for an inkjet printer is usually also the print head, and it might have some dried or sludgy ink clogging its nozzles.

You could try taking the cartridge out and dipping it in a saucer with a little isopropyl rubbing alcohol, then carefully brush the print surface (where the ';jets'; meet the paper) with a Q-tip or paper towel, and reinsert the cartridge (be careful, the ink stains like a mofo).

If that doesn't help, you could see whether anyone does cartridge refills in your area (local Walgreens has started doing this); they may be able to unclog as well as refill cartridges.

I just added ink to my inkjet printer's ink cartage but it still wont print is ther anything I can do?

If you were not getting a good quality print out of the cartridges before filling it than there is really no point in adding more ink.

If you have a new HP, then your printer has a memory and will not recognize the new cartridge as being full no matter how much ink you put in.

If that is the case than chances are that you print head is dry, clogged or even fused.

You can try running several print head cleanings to remedy dryness, or even soaking the print head in BLUE Windex if you have an HP LEXMARK or DELL. O for a couple minutes can help loosen a dry or clogged print head.I just added ink to my inkjet printer's ink cartage but it still wont print is ther anything I can do?
The ink in the nozzles could have hardened up, and blocked the nozzles. Go through your printer's set up instructions, and see if there isn't some procedure to clear the nozzles. There usually is.I just added ink to my inkjet printer's ink cartage but it still wont print is ther anything I can do?
Did you pull that little paper tape off first? My Mom did that once and I had to go all the way out to her house to figure it out for her.

OH....did you install a new cartridge or just add ink to the old one. I hear that those ';filler'; kits aren't really worth the money, so that may (or may not) be it.
Dab the cartridge on a piece of paper or napkin or something and see if any ink is coming out. If it is, then see if you can find the cleaning utilities for your printer. If you know ink is in there and you can't get any drops to show up on, then the nozzles might be completely clogged. If that is the case, you can try soaking the cartridge.

    http://www.pacificink.com/link.php?pg=ca鈥?/a>

This works if you have an HP, Lexmark or Dell cartridge, but it won't work for Epson or Canon.
Do you have two ink cartridges in your printer (one for color and the other for black). Make sure you keep both cartridges in, not having them on causes a printer to mal-function. Sometimes if you have your settings to color but only have a black ink cartridge install it will not print, then again it may print the image black. If you have the color cartridge refilled and the black is empty and your printing settings are set to black and white printing, it will not print.
I've found that before you install the cartridge (after removing the clear tape that covers the ink source), you should leave the cartridge standing upright for several hours so that the ink will start downward.

    Hope that helps

    Hi there:

You have a very good question, which is asked repeatedly in

    the ANSWERS forum.

You do not state the actual model numbers of the Dell and Epson, so that I can only reply with general information, which may not be correct, since both DELL and Epson have hundreds of different models. The answers to the '; COMMON'; models that one might find today, are listed below. These are cut and pasted from previous answers I have given on DELL and Epson, and you can read more information by browsing through my ANSWERS section.

Generally, answering your question, NO you cannot harm your printer if you refill your ink carts -- IF the printhead is actually on the carts. This would be typically true on HP, or LEXMARK, common printers. EPSON, typically has the printehead BOLTED to the large round rail that the print assembly moves on, and you have to tear apart the entire machine to get the printhead out. If you used a really bad ink refill, or bad ink foam cart on the top of the unremoveable printhead, and clogged the head, then you would be rather stuck. DELL typically has an HP or Lexmark type of printhead, which has a gold plated plastic carrier with gold or chrome printholes glued directly on the ink cartridge, so that replacing the cartridge replaces the printhead. If clogging the head with incompatible ink should occur, the printer itself is unaffected. Just get another cart, and everything is back to normal.

As for '; trying'; to refill the ink carts, I have hundreds of bottles of refill inks, and try to refill everything. There are a few difficulties with a few ink carts, and a few bad ink refills, but generally, they are well worth it. Most ink refill manufacturers have special formulas made for each specific brand, so that incompatabilities are eliminated. Any local computer shop will have both clone carts, and refill kits, and you are best to shop around. The refill / clone market changes constantly, so I won't make recommendations! As far as I know, ONLY DELL will supply actual DELL carts, so that you are more or less forced to buy from them or, you can try to refill.

Here are 3 questions and my answers on DELL and Epson, which give a great deal of information.

How many times can you NORMALLY refill Dell ink cartridges before they start failing?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Dell does not make printers. What you are looking at is the same factory type of Lexmark or HP printer carts, with the gold foil on the bottom, which is the actual print head. I like these the best, as, if you are careful ( CAREFUL ) not to press, deform, or mechanically abrade the gold or chrome print hole surface itself, you can use for YEARS, -- I have one that is 10 years old. There are a few situations though, that might give you problems such as a few types of BLACK ink that are incompatible with many standard refills, and if you put in black ink, the cart immediately quits. If you soak the cart in water about 3/4 the height of the cart overnight, you can print a page or 2, and then it quits again. I have not heard any explanation for this behaviour, but a typical cart is the dark green capped black cart in a LEXMARK printer 5XX or 6XX printer with the 16/17 26/27 carts. The color, on the other hand, can be refilled for years. The best carts just have various compositions of ordinary FOAM in them, sometimes with a layer of fiber on the top or bottom, but the foam is the holding mechanism. NEVER drill an existing vent hole on a cart if it contains micro-baffles that allow a tiny amount of air in, without allowing dry air outside to dry out the foam. HP uses a dual bladder air charged black, on a few models, and a few other ones do as well. These require more time and care in loading and taping.

If you purchase an ink refill kit, there is usually online instructions

and/or a manual that explains where to drill holes and tape etc.

They may even explain about the bladders or foam, although they usually do not. I have learned where to drill holes '; my '; way, which does not always agree with the typical instructions, and even different ink refill instructions have different methods.

If you are serious about refilling, COSCO has an awesome refill kit with 3 huge bottles of black, 3 huge bottles of the 3 colors, and 2 bottles of the photo ink, the drills, beads, tape, manual etc. for $20. I would go to many kitchen stores or such in the malls and look for digital scales - they are everywhere, about $25 and will tell you how much the full or empty carts weigh, and you can tell EXACTLY how much ink is in all the carts, regardless of the estimators.

Try not to push in or abrade the actual print surface, although it can be wiped gently with a damp soft cloth in the direction of the print movement. I put old carts that are sitting too long unused and drying out , in a glass of water 3/4 the way to the top overnight.

In filling, each cart for each type is slightly different, but for foam

carts, I drill a hole for each color about 3/4 the way up the side in an area that I put a piece of black electrical tape over when I am done. I try to avoid altering the micro-air ducting that is used by the manufacturer. After soaking, and filling to the 3/4 mark, I sit the cart on 2 or 3 folded kleenex gently in a glass for a few minutes and then check to see if the print surface is still dripping - if it wipes clean, then you are ready to do a couple of test prints.

When refilling, it is probably best to fill ALL the colors, and keep them this way.

Letting the print head go to completely empty IS REALLY BAD - because the print head is 1/2 to 3/4 away from the foam, separated by a microfilter and a long tube. If this tube EVER gets empty, the fast drying ink dries inside the tube, and on TOP of the print holes, and you will never fully regain the use of the cart after that. (( I do, by tying a string to a filled cart and spinning it at about 10 G to force air bubbles out of the tube, and by melting holes into the tube and using hypodermic needles to rinse with water, and them fill with new ink, and then epoxy the holes shut - most people would be unable to do these proceedures, and as far as I know, I am the only one who has done so. But then, I have over 200 printers, so that I have to be creative... ))

Keeping the print heads used on a daily basis ( I recommend a print of all 4 colors at least every three days ) and NEVER letting the heads dry out, would enable you to use the carts for years...

Lets face it, you can buy a brand new printer WITH carts for less than the carts, do that if try to use the old ones, you have nothing to lose,- if you screw up, well, you buy a new one - if you drill it properly, then you just saved the price of either a cart , or a new printer. I have seen, in an industrial park, a pile of brand new identical printers, in the boxes, with all the software disks and packaging, untouched, except for the box top opened and the

ink carts removed ie, the entire box, software, printer, packaging, and even free bonus CD's and sample paper, was less than the ink carts, so they just bough a pile of new printers, and threw them all out-- for the ink. Go figure.

    Hope this helps.

Dell changes options and marketing constantly, so I am GUESSING what printer you probably have. If you post the exact carts and description of them and the printer, I could help better.

Also, I note from two of the other answers provided since I posted this, that people are stating that you can ruin your printer and void your warranty and damage things by using '; NON DELL '; ink..

Please.... give it a break. I have never, in a quarter of a century heard of an ink refill damaging a foam cartridge type of printer - people can damage a printer and do really strange things, but if the ink, which everyone states is poorer quality, is not giving you the TRUE, DELL, look,

then just get another DELL cartridge. Your printer has no idea what ink is hitting the paper that you are printing on!

Someone mentioned that LEXMARK has a bad reputation of poor ink cartridges, which is debateable - which make model and year and refill cart is the person talking about? Where are the statistics? Out of the hundreds of printers I work with, I can list the models from HP, Canon, Epson, etc. that had horrible problems, and for that matter, I can list horrible problems with almost any '; Brand name'; computer component over the years. With new techniques and products and modifications being sold daily, it would be difficult to imagine that every single thing sold by one specific company was perfect, all the time - they arent, and people do get stuck with lemons occasionally - from ALL manufacturers.. All you can do is hope for the best. But the SALES and MARKETING and LEGAL bs of doom and gloom in using a NON DELL ink, is actually funny! I cant help but wonder how many HUNDREDS of printers these people have actually used in their lifetime....

Another addendum, as people provide other answers.... Reading over the answers is quite funny since the logic they present is '; DONT use refills, since it will destroy the machine and warranty , AND, throw out the printer anyway, since it not a good one in the first place ! '; So ... I ask, why worry about a warranty if you are going to throw out the printer and buy a '; good'; one ? Also, below an ANSWER states that you CAN refill, but never use a generic kit... but they don't state what you CAN use if you arent using a generic kit? And they highlight the word '; NEVER ';. As though HP or DELL put out name-brand specific refill kits !!! Unheard of -- they give away printers at cost just to make money on the carts, so providing '; NAME BRAND '; refills would destroy their greedy marketing plans...

You can check my ANSWERS for information on other printers, ink and refills as well.

Epson CX5400 Printer Problem - Doesn't recognize full black cartridge?

Adopted the printer. Says that there isn't any black ink. The cartridge is so full it sloshes. Everything ';looks'; fine in there - the tube is connected. I don't think it's clogged because if it were that, it would at least ATTEMPT to print.

It won't let me do a cleaning or alignment or anything until I get this problem fixed (which is annoying).

Should I go buy another ink cartridge to see if that fixes the problem? And if I do buy one and it doesn't work, are you able to return it? I wouldn't think so but a lot of stores do amazing things sometimes.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks for your help and have a great day!

Hi there. I have lots of printers - 200 or so.

I have fought with quite a number of models similar to yours,

    winning only occasionally.... usually loosing.

You state the tube is connected - and I wonder what tube. The

carts do not have any tubes on them.

Looking at the documentation for the exact catridge you are using,

the BLACK ink T032120$33.24 on the web, and looking

at the PDF of the printer manuals on the web, your machine is

almost identical to many of the units I am familiar with.

The only tube is a vaccuum hose under the print head cleaning mechanism.

The last person who posted a question stated that they used the printer for over a year with no problems, and changed the ink but it prints nothing. I asked how they went about changing the ink carts for a year, and later they posted that they never changed the carts in a year, and then let it sit - ouch... when they went to use it again, even with new carts, it would not print...

Please note in brief, that the print carts on the TOP of the print head assembly have nothing to do with the print head drying out on the nozzle area - inches away....at the far bottom.

    *******************************

Is there some way to get a color printer going again after some downtime? I already replaced cartridges.?

    EPSON cx6400

The problem has nothing to so with the ink in the cartridges on

the TOP of the moving print head assembly, but rather, with the

tubes running FROM the ink at the top, down, into the the PRINT

nozzels... These tubes are LONG, and the ink is deliberately

FAST drying, so that the ink in the tubes dries out from both

ends, if given any opportunity to do so. The ink right at the nozzel

holes is the FIRST to go, normally, since there is no way to protect it -- the top end of the tubes usually has the ink refills sitting there, with '; some '; ink, which keeps that end from drying out. The WORST case is to remove the top carts, say for example, to go to the store to make certain that you have the right replacements, and then leave the carts off for a long time...

this is deadly... Epson had dozens of identical looking carts, with horribly long, almost identically numbered carts, that are NOT the same, so that this is a REAL problem, and I know lots of people

who have spent a lot of time and money getting carts that are the wrong ones...Make certain, to start, that the numbers are IDENITCAL to the ones needed...

Once the bottom print head nozzels are dried, and/or the tubes ABOVE the print nozzel heads start to dry, there is no easy way

to get at the dried ink...

On the web the other day I saw an ad for a CLEANING SOLUTION for print heads, which claimed to solve many similar problems, and you could try a search for similar products...

On '; SOME '; printers, the print head can be removed, like on

many older Canons, and with HP and Lexmark, the print heads

'; ARE '; the ink refills, so this solves the problem...

Epsons bolt the head onto the rail, so that getting cleaning solution ( which I have stopped using ), or just water, ONTO the

print nozzle holes is difficult - but not impossible, and on the

web I have read a number of reports of people who have revived

a dead print head... you have nothing to loose by trying...

Here is a typical answer that I have given in the past...

( try not to be prematurely discouraged... follow the suggestions

since the degree of difficulty is different in every case - you

may have complete, easy success .... )

Here is my reply to the question....

    ______________________________...

I have a couple of new epson printers.

The new cx printers are extremely hard to fill. How did you fill them in the first place?

If you drill or melt a hole in the top, in the EXACT

correct position, and slowly fill them, letting the air

and ink bubbles exhaust, then, they are ';full';.

I weigh the cartridges when new, and when empty, and

when re-filled, so that I know if indeed, they are

re-filled. You can now buy gram or ounce weight digital scales

everywhere, including kitchen stores, and retail outlets,

and they are 20 bucks or so, and very accurate.

Check the carts to see if on the front, bottom or back

edge there is a tiny green circuitboard attached to

ink cart with two melted dots of case plastic posts.

If so, then you have otherwise, a piece of plastic,

contaning 35 cents worth of ink, with a self-destruct

programmable chip on it. Every time you use ink, the

chip is programmed by 7 gold contact points, and the

printer ';guesses'; how much ink you have, and subtracts it.

At about 25 per cent to 33 percent full, the chip is

told that you are out of ink. This rather full piece

of plastic, is then DEAD, and cannot be used again.

I have used a new, FULL cart, and simply run the CLEAN HEAD

Epson utility a few times, and been told that the carts are now

    50 percent Full ( HALF EMPTY !!! -- and I hadn't printed

    anything yet!!! )

The extra caution in telling a cart with ink in, that it

is empty, is done to prevent the cart from ever really

emptying, which would suck air into the carriage fill

post nozzel, and into an inch or two of piping inside

the print carriage / head assembly, and in 20 minutes the

ink inside these tubes would dry, and almost permanently

destroy the tiny print holes ability to re-wet with any

    new ink.

If you take out a cart, you must either put in a new one

immediately, or re-fill immediately. I have seen many

Epsons in the garbage - all with badly dried print head /

carriage assemblies - if you have a SCANNER/ PRINTER,

such as my CX printers, the second the print head is

';told'; by estimation software, that it is ';empty'; the

entire machine, including the scanner is DEAD, since,

when you turn it on, you cannot get past the ERROR

    ink out message !!!!.

The Espon printers with the ';new and improved'; print ink

heads and ink carts, are EXTREMELY fragile, and will

self-destruct at the tiniest problem. If the power goes

off, and the head is not parked, it dries out. If you

take out a cart and go to the store with the cart to

make certain you have the correct one, the print head

dries out. You cannot take out the print head to soak

it in water without completely tearing the printer apart,

and removing the delicate microfilm plastic position

strip, and the drive belt, and many fragile parts...

If you do manage to get the print head out, the print head

is extremely delicate, and ordinary tap water will

contaminate the print head holes, and actually

clog the head worse than the dried ink. Using paper

products with sharp cellulose fibers clogs the heads,

if you wipe the heads.. ( one webiste uses strips of

coffee filters and distilled water, with some success ).

The green, self destructing programmable chips on the

empty pieces of plastic cases, ARE RE-PROGRAMMABLE, and

programmers are available at most decent computer retailers,

such as COMP USA, FRYs, Staples, Business Depot, etc.,

since these reputable companies know that the customers

are being ripped off with being forced to purchase 50

cent ink carts, that are not even empty, for 40 times the

cost of manufacture! You MUST make certain that the programmer

you purchase LISTS the printer model, or the cart model,

since there are dozens of programmers, and Epson keeps

changing the programming on new models, so that customers

are forced to buy only over-priced Epson'; carts!

I am surprised that you state you FILLED an Epson cart,

which is one of the most difficult carts to fill ( I have

hundreds of printers), and yet you don't know about the programmable

chip on the side of the cart...

I use advice from several Epson user sites, and cut out

a section of useless plastic on the top of the cart,

and cover the melted access hole with black electrical

tape, which restores the cart back to the original

micro-channel air ducting. Leaving a big, ugly gaping

hole in the top, as all webistes I have seen, tell users

to do, in view of how fast the ink dries rock hard, is

    stupid, to say the least.

Search dogpile.com or yahoo's search engine to find

EPSON INK REFILL website pages, and there are some excellent

    resources, with pictures.

Generally, anyone I know who has been inadvertently

duped into purchasing one of the new Epson programmable

ink cart machines, eventually throws it in the garbage

in frustration. Sales people are either ignorant, or

devious, in not telling customers that they are buying a

product that self-destructs, and wastes ink, and is

extremely fragile. Even the EPSON instructions have pages

    of warnings of ';do not touch '; this, ';do not do that';

Caution - you must Immediately replace cart, etc. etc.

and these warnings are SERIOUS. Most people don't even read

    the pages of fine print.

I will never purchase an Epson programmable chip printer

(printer scanner) etc. again, and will tell everyone

who asks to avoid them like the plague.

    SOOooooooo....

As long as you replaced the carts IMMEDIATELY after re-filling, and parked the heads properly, your machine

is probably not dead ... YET. Every minute you wait with

out printing a page, causes the print heads, EVEN PARKED,

to dry out - the pad that they sit on ';helps'; to seal out

air, but is connected to a vaccum pump that sucks ink

out every time the unit is turned on, AND, the fiberous

material the heads rest on gets saturated with gooey ink,

that eventually hardens by itself, no matter what you do !

    The vaccuum system used to

';clean'; the Epson printer heads is connected to the ENTIRE

print head... this means that, for example, if Yellow and

RED print head holes are clogged, the vaccuum does not

change its location or pressure, so that the ';clean'; process

sucks twice as much ink out of the BLACK and BLUE ( Since

the yellow and red are clogged ) and has little effect on the

desired purpose of actually ';cleaning'; the clogged print holes. This explains why some cartridges can be almost empty

and others almost full, while the ';estimated'; ink levels

show all colours are equal. The vaccuum process on the new machines

only works when there is no problem in the first place, and

    wastes huge amounts of ink...

The assembly, the heads, and the design is inherently

self-destructing, without a great deal of difficult

cleaning and maintenance, which is totally beyond most

    typical consumers.

If you really want to keep the machine, have TWO sets of

ink carts, - one set always full. Tape the bottom hole

of the full, spare set, after filling (clean it first),

with black electrical tape to seal the nozzle from dirt and air.

Put electrical tape over the air hole you created to fill it.

When the carts show the EMPTY warning, and the machine

halts dead, quickly install the new, re-progrmmed, filled

ink carts, and then print a test page, etc.

Re-fill, and re-program ALL the inks carts you just removed

(not just the one that first reported it was ';empty'; ),

    and tape over the holes, and set aside. Weigh the ';empty';

carts before and after filling - you will find, surprisingly,

that even though the ink status monitor shows 3 carts at

25% empty, some will be practically full, while others are

truly almost dead empty... (which is dangerously close to

sucking in air and destroying the print head !!!! )

You ';can'; keep one of these machines up and running

efficiently and COST EFFECTIVELY, but it is a pain in the

butt, and messy, -- The only ';OK'; thing about these

printers is that they actually DO deliver a reasonable

quality print when they actually ';work'; properly.

Going out and purchasing cases of new, EPSON brand

ink carts would bankrupt most users, and would be

ridiculous beyond words in an office environment, where

hundreds of pages are printed a day. I have seen many EPSON

printers with RED and YELLOW ink passages dried rock hard

-- with brand new full ink Red and Yellow carts on top --

because in an office environment, hundreds of black and

white TEXT pages are printed, and Epson uses BLUE and BLACK

to make the black printing, but NOT the Red and Yellow,

which dry out solid - in a brand new machine, which is

in use everyday, and parked properly, with brand new

EPSON carts, which have to be purchased regularly, to

keep the Black and White pages going, EVEN THOUGH the

old Red and Yellow carts are absolutely FULL, - since the

the printer has no idea how much ink is really being used-

just that the carriage is going back and forth, and

it ';estimates'; that the red and yellow are, eventually

empty, even though the ink tubes and print head are

rock solid with ink, and the New, FULL, Epson Carts, are

never used. -- they can't be used, since the tubes are

    blocked solid!

I hope this advice helps to keep your machine going a

bit longer. You need a great deal of luck. You need to spend an

hour ot two on the web researching how to fill the carts

properly, and how the inside technology of the manifold

air/liquid compartments work, and how to HANDLE the

    carts carefully, etc.

Some of the NO-Name, non-Epson carts are cheaper, and

MUCH easier to fill, but there are to date, no web instructions

on how to re-fill the clone carts. They also have the

';new and improved'; Epson feature of killing your print

every time with a message that you must acknowledge,

stating that you are NOT USING A GENUINE EPSON ink cart,

and print quality may suffer - do you wish to continue?

This deliberate halting of normal print makes using

clones very time consuming, and difficult - which, is of

course, exactly what the Corporate Epson executives

want to do in the first place !! To get around this, you

can take the original green chips off the original

Epson carts, and put them on the new, easy to fill,

clone carts, and the printer will never know the difference.

If you REALLY want to make the units easy, you can rip apart the

printer, and remove the green circuit board from the

printhead, with the gold contacts, remove the thin plastic

electrical cable that plugs into the print head ink cart

sensors, and place the cable on the top of the printer.

By placing the chips on the cart reader on the TOP of the

machine, the stupid ';estimator'; program will think that

the carts in the print head are connected, and give

warnings on the completely non-working chips on top of the

printer. You can then quickly re-program the accessible,

top mounted chips, and only replace ink carts that are

actually getting low ( you can weigh them), in half the

time and effort. However, since the carts do not hold

very much ink in the FIRST PLACE, you will still be forced

to refill on a frequent basis.

If I ever get the time I have a few other mechanical and programming

ideas to try to see if I could continually re-program

the ink cart chips on top of the unit automatically,

and use micro plastic tubes to permanently fill the carts

on the moving printhead, using huge bottles of ink, mounted

on the back of the machine. The Epson carts have an anti-

overfill, anti-drip pressure operated diaphram fill

mechanism which would work under such a scheme, but would

be too difficult for the average home or office user

    to build and install...

Generally, for all the ridiculous expense and time and

problems encountered with this Epson line of printer

( and printer /scanner) I would simply buy something

else, and avoid the problems. Sony got greedy and deliberately put

viruses on new-instore music CDs, and Epson, in my opinion

got greedy and invented this printer from hello...

Both companies are shooting themselves in the foot, and

    making people AVOID their products....

Again, good luck. Please do your homework on the web,

and observe all cautions and warnings. This is one case

where every piece of fine print REALLY applies!

It is not an answer to my question... It is a full thesis on the subject of EPSON CX4600 printer issue. Thank you, Robin. You've saved few hours of my precious time and about $100 expenses for new ink cratriges. As of now both of my CX4600 are in the trash. I WILL NEVER BUY EPSON GARBIGE AGAIN!!!

Now, after all this, please do not get discouraged - I have no idea what shape your printer is in, or how long it was left to dry out,

or how ';dried'; the heads are... you could be lucky and have a simpler problem that may fix itself.

1/ make certain that the ink cart is the correct one - I listed the number at the top here

2/ the gold contacts on the chip MUST be clean - check that the chip on the cart has shiny contacts - clean with a damp, slightly soapy cloth and dry

3/ re- insert the cart. You should get SOME kind of error message - it should state '; XX XX X X X X '; and this error message is not trivial - please post it to get more help without everyone guessing !

As to your question about buying another ink cart just to check,

I would highly advise against this unless you have checked everything else, and can get black ink out the printhead using

the wet blotter paper first. If black ink is actually comming out the printhead , then you are doing great. If you can touch the printhead and get a full bar of black ink across the head, then you are probably ok. It is at this specific point that I find 99% of the problem - not the top of the print assembly, inches away.

No store ever that I have heard of will take back an opened ink cart ! In California at frys or in New York or CompUSA or Business Depot/Staples, Best Buy, Future Shop, etc. etc. I have never heard of opened ink returns ! ! Sometimes Business Depot/ Staples will give you a little pile of printer paper if you give them a cart - but the price listed for your cart is $33.xx plus tax, and to get a $2.95 pad of used recycled paper for $30 seems a bit of a waste.

There is a LOT of information in the posting above, which may have ideas that you can use. If these fail, post your actions, and I will check back..

Robin, this is great info. I have Dell 942 all in one printer and Epson c88. I guess the refilling is too much hustle. I will stick to generic brands. Can you refere me to the websites that you found reliable for decent quality of generci inks? Report Abuse

I've tried websites and gotten junk... I've refilled my own (black only) with limited success. I just go to walmart and get pelikan rmfg, if available, or OEM .. mine's lexmark .. best price around.
